Curcumin is a compound extracted from an Indian spice, turmeric (Curcumin longa). Curcumin has exhibited numerous therapeutic actions, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which contributes to its anti-arthritic attribute. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which involves the retrogression of the cartilage, affecting the fluidity of joint motions. Curcumin decreases the production of certain inflammatory markers, reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Also, it is found to suppress gene expression of several enzymes which are crucial in the degradation of the joint matrix.
PRESERVING THE JOINTS
The gum resin of Boswellia serrata comprises a high concentration of boswellic acids, which is known for its anti-inflammatory activity. Boswellic acids have been identified to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, the key enzyme in the production of inflammatory mediators which are involved in the degradation of collagen and elastin found in the extracellular joint matrix. With such valuable properties, it is useful in impeding the development of osteoarthritis. Boswellic acids were proven in studies to alleviate pain and subsequently promoting physical activity and reducing limb stiffness.
